Dragon's Teeth

For the unwary in Three Rivers, the dragon waits. Small children walk on the other side of the street.

Monochrome Race

Seen in monochrome is the race from the Rocky River as it exits the old powerhouse. The race then goes under Michigan Avenue, through Scidmore Park, and joins the St. Joseph River just above the point where the main part of the Rocky flows into the St. Joseph. In the distance is a barn in the park.

The old powerhouse provided electricity for downtown Three Rivers in decades past; the building now fuels the area with expresso, dispensed at LA's Coffee, which shares space in the former powerhouse building with a travel agent.

Leaving the cafe yesterday morning with my coffee in hand, the scene just looked like a perfect monochrome. To see more of the world in monochrome, just click over to The Monochrome Weekend, presented by Aileni.

Car Waits in Snow

Like yesterday's horse, this car also has a blanket! Not as warm, though.

Happy Chinese New Year and also Valentine's Day, both at once. Take your sweetie out to a nice Chinese restaurant!

Chef Monochrome

Rick, the owner and chef at Matt & Mike's Eatery, seen cooking through the chrome-rimmed serving window at his new location off Michigan Ave./Highway M60 in Three Rivers. Matt and Mike's is named for his sons, and was downtown for 25 years. A boutique baby store now occupies his old location, and his new address is 103 South Lincoln Avenue. Just in case you were looking.

This was my favorite b/w picture this week. Others I took were more stark and contrasty, but I think this has plenty going on.

Monochrome in the Gallery

Everything looks more mysterious when backlit - and in monochrome.

Monochrome Icy Snow

This is another one of the kids from yesterday, on ice. She has a need for speed!

Mysterious trees

My Monochrome this week involves those light-wrapped trees (see yesterday's post.)

Night Mono

Another night shot; this is of the old Kellogg office, now a law office. Actually at this time of day, it is a closed office. I liked the shadows cast by the street lamps on the stairs and building.

I'm still too busy with holiday and family to do much looking and responding, but you should check out more monochromes -click over to The Monochrome Weekly, presented by Aileni.

And, happy solstice!

That's just about how it looked

In today's monochromatic gloom and drizzle, a weak sun slides its reflection across the St. Joseph River. It almost looks like the moon - especially in black & white. Looking toward the Three Rivers power dam from Riverside Cemetery.

Sign of the Times

Posted on the library door: "Patrons with flu symptoms are asked to refrain from using the library..."

I know, it's an odd photo, but it works for me. See more of the world in monochrome at The Monochrome Weekly, presented by Aileni.

Goggle Dog

Walking along the street was this serious pit bull with his owner. No, I don't know why he's wearing goggles. And don't pet him... according to his backpack sign, he's working!

(The dog looks quite a bit like the famous "Nipper".)

Bookstore

Inside Lowry's Books in downtown Three Rivers there are stacks and shelves and piles of books winding through rows and rooms. " Just what you want" is in here somewhere.

Sunset, again

I didn't mean to post yet another sky picture - but there it was yesterday evening, monochrome. A sense of scale comes from the trees and power lines in the lower right corner, (click image for a larger view.)

Double Sun

Cold water and warm air lead to heavy fog over the entire Three Rivers area the last few mornings. Here, the sun and trees are mysteriously doubled in the fog. This scene was almost monochrome by itself.

Passing by

On the highway yesterday, in traffic, we were passed by -- a horse-drawn Amish buggy! Old order, best in black & white. In the background is a gas (petrol) station -- something the oat-burner gets to skip.

Fall Color in Black & White

The saturated colors of fall are still occupying my sight and photos, so for my monochrome this week I went for more leaves. These are of cranberry viburnum, hanging over the Portage River. The fruits are the size and color of cranberries, but aren't edible - not even the squirrels will eat them. The plant is indigenous here, though, so it is odd that nothing eats it!

Somehow the leaves, which are now yellow and pink, seem more translucent than when they were green. I think using b&w brings this out.

Copper and Brass

This is a look at the German-made copper and brass still in the Brandy House at Cory Lake Orchards (described in yesterday's post.) Although the color of the metal is beautiful, the form and patterns are even more striking in b&w.

Hobo Hotel

This old barn by the Portage River was known locally as the "Hobo Hotel", a place where hobos would stay during the great depression of the 1930s, when many unemployed young men wandered about the country.

B/w gives the image a ghostly quality, a remembrance of the history of those old hard times.

Monochrome River

The Portage River, looking downstream from the Hoffman Street Bridge. It could be 100 years ago - or even longer. Is that a fur-trader camp there on the bank?
