Nosferatu

Last night, just in time for Halloween, the Riviera Theater played Nosferatu, the 1921 German Expressionist vampire horror film, still scary after all these years. It was an amazingly good print, the tints still visible, and best of all, music composed and performed by Blue Dahlia. I had a front row seat, and took this picture of musicians and monster during the film (click small photo for larger view.)

The avant-garde musical association Blue Dahlia has been writing original scores for silent movies for about ten years, and has performed around the eastern US. The music is a fusion of classical, jazz, and world music styles mixed with an awesome array of sound effects. What can you say about a group that has both a banjo and a didgeridoo? If they are ever performing in a city near you, don't miss them! Website: http://www.bluedahlia.com/

There is a lot of fascination with Halloween and skulls and horror films. My 53 year old daughter is in the hospital with blood clots in her lungs and she is hoping to get out before Friday so she can drive to Kentucky to see some horror program for Halloween. lol

I had to search the 'didgeridoo', but love the idea of the old movies with new original scores!

Nosferatu is such a classic silent film. It fits very well to Halloween. Sounds like it must have been a great evening.

I should imagine it might be a tad scary sitting in that picture theatre alone at night.

It was a great movie. Before we decided the undead were sexy, Nosferatu is what the undead were supposed to be.
