oops - I have it on the authority of the person who does the shearing that they are alpacas. The wool is nicer than that of llamas! The hair is removed that way for a reason, but I still think they look like giant poodles.
They also make a strange birdlike whistling noise.

Poodles, oh yes. Badly cut poodles, whit a beard.
I don't think they would be very happy if they looked in the mirror!
